Ash Fall

They won't read this, but I want to thank our facilities crew, Sodexo workers, and our construction contractors who teamed up to make sure campus was clean after the Taal eruption so we could return to classes.

He would teach Woods.

He kept a pretty low profile this semester, so many of you may not have noticed him much. But I want to thank Simon Lovatt for being willing to step into teaching Woods classes this semester. It would have been a shame not to be able to offer any industrial arts classes this year, so I appreciate his service.

A few senior boys even made a custom couch for their hallway thanks to his help!

Some of you missed this, but I thought it was worth sharing again. Here are the responses to the student gratitude survey that was administered in homeroom. The bigger words are answers that were given more often.

Anne Frank

posted Nov 24, 2019, 4:59 AM by HSD Principal

I really hope you got the chance to see The Diary of Anne Frank last week. The show was phenomenal and our students pulled off something incredible. A huge thanks to the emotional investment of Crystal for working with the class through the semester. Thanks also to Steven and the Cadd crew for the many many hours put in over the past month to make this a show to remember.

Blood Drive

posted Nov 10, 2019, 2:00 AM by HSD Principal

Thanks to Carolyn and NHS for sponsoring our blood drive this week. If I remember correctly, we donated almost 40 units - although a surprisingly high number of people were turned away for low hemoglobin counts. I guess we all need to eat more spinach.

Busy Days

posted Oct 27, 2019, 12:02 AM by HSD Principal

Two staff members had super busy days this past week:
  • Thanks to Sunny for all her organization and running around to pull off the university fair on Monday.
  • And thanks to Josh Manthe (and assistant to the AD Garrett) for organizing and running two soccer tournaments and a middle school volleyball tournament on campus all on the same weekend.

Coaching Time

posted Oct 20, 2019, 2:36 AM by HSD Principal

Other than teaching, coaching may provide the most contact hours with students to mentor and encourage them. As first season ends, thanks to the coaches who have given much of their time over the past two months to help develop and train our student athletes. Thanks especially to Dave W, Val, and Tom who on top of coaching for a season have also given up a week with their families to allow our student to participate in the ACSC tournaments last week.

One-Man Show

posted Sep 22, 2019, 1:32 AM by HSD Principal

I want to give thanks to Jan Pieren for putting in the man-hours to produce our electronic Tiwalan yearbook. Specifically this past week, he single-handedly organized and took the team pictures for all the first season sports.

So give Jan a thanks when you see him.

Filling In

Roberta Maxwell is back in her class, and Jay and Emily Bowdoin have finished their first week of teaching. Thanks to Carol Barner, Erin Hiatt, Steve Hong, Anke Malessa, and Angie Kenworthy for covering classed for the first few weeks until everyone got on campus. Thanks also to Evan and Carl who also pulled extra Humanities duty.

The ways in which you all are willing to help each other is still one of my favorite things about our staff.

High School Retreat

posted Aug 25, 2019, 11:48 PM by HSD Principal

Thanks to everyone who monitored buses, counted students, judged competitions, stayed up late, woke up early, had deep meaningful conversations, organized activities, got wet and muddy, led homeroom discussions, picked up neglected clothes, and all the other responsibilities that helped me, Crystal, and ExCo get through High School Retreat.
